One of the best things about being Formission Director is getting a bird’s-eye view of the fellowship and gathering stories of what God is doing all across our province. This week’s celebration story is from Burlington on the Baie Verte Penninsula, a church with a huge heart for their community. Here is a snapshot from Pastor Craig Lane:
“We have been experiencing a burst in vision for outreach within our assembly. This past year in August our assembly was able to do an outreach during “The Gathering” that occurs on an annual basis and attracts hundreds of people into our community. We served complimentary homemade muffins, tea and coffee and were able to hand out writing pens with an inscription, ‘You are Loved – John 3:16’. This event was well received and began to open doors within our community.
In October our assembly did 100 treat bags with a message of Gods love through a bookmark inserted into each bag. We set up a table on the roadside to give out the treats and were able to serve free hot chocolate with cookies as well to parents and children.
In November our church hosted a community bonfire where we served hot chocolate, wieners and marshmallows. There was a tremendous response from the community to this event.
In December our Church ladies group put together five baskets of goodies for the nursing staff at the health care centre and one for the teachers at the school in Middle Arm.
We have an outreach event planned for January to provide a meal to 19 members of the department of highways in appreciation for their service.
In February our church’s men’s group is doing a complimentary community couples breakfast, and we will be serving free snacks to the 100 children at Middle Arm School.
It has been one year now to date that some young mothers from our assembly took upon themselves to form a group whose purpose would solely be to reach out to other young mothers within our community, plan events for them and support them in times of need. This group has made a tremendous impact within our community!
It has been awesome to see our congregation members become so excited about reaching out into our communities to show the love of Christ. We are anticipating great things!”
My favourite part of this story is how Pastor Craig highlights over and over how the mission has emerged from the church itself. As we share more of these celebration stories, I think this is something that will become a common theme:
A group of people within a church, supported and equipped by the leadership, identify a group in the community who become the mission and take it upon themselves to creatively share the love of Christ.
